March 25, 2009 by Angela

Walter Payton was an NFL player who spent the entirety of his career with the Chicago Bears. He was born in 1954 and died in 1999 from a rare disease called primary sclerosing cholangitis which affects the liver. While he had an incredible college football career at Jackson State, he became a star in the NFL. Payton’s nickname in the League was Sweetness, and he at one time held the record for most touchdowns, carries and career rushing yards. Mike Ditka called Payton “the greatest football player…but an even greater human being.”

During his career Payton won two Player of the Year Awards and was on the winning team of Super Bowl XX in 1985. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993. He is remembered as one of the best football players of all time.
