March 25, 2009 by Angela

Roberto Clemente was a professional baseball player who was born in 1934 and died in 1972. His death came as a result of a plane crash into the ocean as he was traveling to aid earthquake victims in Nicaragua.

During his Major League baseball career Clemente played right field. His career began in the Puerto Rican Professional Baseball League with the Santurce Crabbers. He was soon offered a contract from the Brooklyn Dodgers, who asked him to play for the Montreal Royals, which he did.

In 1954, he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates and became part of major league baseball. Clemente played for 18 years and earned the MVP Award in 1966. Posthumously Roberto Clemente was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Various honors have been bestowed on him since, such as the Congressional Gold Medal and Presidential Medal of Freedom.
