Ceiling Fans

June 8, 2008 by Mike

Years have passed from the good ole’ days at American Standard, mass producing the standard white ceiling fans found in most homes in America. These days, you can get a ceiling fan that remembers you birthday and has a built-in alarm clock. Okay, we’ll have to fact-check that one. Anyway, the point remains that fans, exceptional ones at that, get noticed and are a great way to make your rec room stand out from others.

Basic Styles
Of course, you can just buy whatever ceiling fan that looks good to you and be on your way. However, just like how you were taught how to dress, things should probably match. If you live in a modern home, have a contemporary style fan like this one:

If you have a tropical theme or have a rec room that is relaxed, composed of your random things, consider getting a ceiling fan with palm tree leaves as blades or something similar. Alternatively, if you have a rec room with a retro theme from past decades, you should have a ceiling fan that’s fairly basic and matches that area.

Fan Sizes
The seize of the fan should accommodate the size of the area it’s going in. Before buying a fan, take exact measurements of the room — if the room is 100 square feet or less, a 36-inch fan would be fine. Rooms that are around 100-145 square feet, purchase a fan with 42-inch blades and those rooms from 145 to 225 square feet need a fan with blades just under 50 inches.

Larger rooms up to 400 square feet need 52 to 54-inch fans, while those from 400-500 square feet need a 56-inch blade. And frankly, if your room is any larger than this consider making it a separate house.

Have a Light?
Lastly, decide if you want a ceiling fan with a lot or not. If you’re going to be installing or already have recessed lighting or some other form of light, it isn’t necessary and will just make the fan look bulky and less attractive. If you do want a ceiling fan with a light, there is new technology available that allows you to control these lights by dimmers, as well as by remote control.
